What a Weekend…

I’m up late, being a girl, and weeping over the movie P.S. I Love You.  It’s a movie I swore to avoid.  I didn’t want to watch it.  I’m not sure why I decided to watch it, although it might have something to do with Heidi raving over the book, etc.  Yea, that’s why, and it’s so great.  I think sometimes I forget that deep down I’m a total girl.  I like to pretend I’m above the cry-face hopeless romantic behavior, but I’m not.  I know all the words to Sleepless in Seattle, and I melt whenever Patrick spontaneously slow dances with me.  I love randomly getting flowers and tiny little random moments that add up to loving someone.

No matter how much football I watch, how much I curse, or how many men I can drink under the table, I’m a girl.  I’m a sappy girl.  And yes, I do love pink.  I really do.  It’s taken YEARS to admit that, but I’ll never wear it.  It won’t happen.

Anyway…

This weekend was the long-awaited engagement/housewarming party, and it was such a great success!  One of the main reasons for the fabulous success of the evening was Miss Adventures in Shaw!  She catered the whole thing.  I wouldn’t say cook, it was literally catering, considering the magnitude of awesome it reached.  Homemade bread,  homemade meatballs made of veal and onion, from scratch red sauce and basil cream sauce, from scratch bruschetta (pictured below), and homemade cheesecake.

That’s right, it’s beautiful. (You can find all the photos from that evening HERE.)  The whole evening was completely wonderful.  We even received our first gift as a couple from the wonderful Noel and his beautiful wife, Leslie. Noel is a friend of mine from high school.  Back in the day, when people knew me as “Beth”.  That’s right, back then it was What Beth Said.  Doesn’t have the same ring, I know.

The food was amazing.  The laughs were amazing.  We took some INS examine, courtesy of Stephanie… apparently we didn’t answer enough of the questions correctly about our relationship for us to obtain a Visa. Good thing we’re American!

There was some drama that made me sad and cut into time I could have been spending with friends who made a point to stop by when they didn’t have to.  It amazes me how my own priorities have changed.  A few years ago, I would have been all up in the drama, and now I’m just offended.  I feel like things like that are not only a slight against me but my guests who came to have a good time.  I used to perpetrate things like that in years past, but at some point we have to move on.

It all ended in a lovely way, though.  Hugs and smiles from amazing friends.  Laughter while sharing too many secrets on our front steps.  Patrick and I dancing after everyone had left to old standards like Frank Sinatra.

That’s right, he danced with me.  I was rather tipsy (as I told the guests who arrived later… repeatedly and apologetically) and he danced with me.  And it was breathtaking.  It’s the little things like that.  Like the roses in the picture?  I had a bad day, and he came home with roses.  He rang the doorbell and gave me roses, because he knew it would have more of an impact that just walking into the apartment.

It was so perfect.  Sorry, I’m gushing.  I couldn’t have asked for better friends or a better evening.  I feel so blessed.  The only tragedy was that some friends who were supposed to receive an invitation did not… because I did not type their email address correctly.  (I’m so sorry, Janet!)

I guess another party is in order!

Another wonderful thing that resulted in the party was that I “booked” my first wedding vendor.  The wonderful, talented, amazing Adventures in Shaw will be making our wedding cake.  Let me tell you about this wonderful girl!  I’m picky as hell about everything, from friends to food.  She’s amazing at both.  She’s the only person I would ever trust with such a task and I know I’ll love whatever she does.  I know it’ll taste like perfection and look incredible.  Read her blog, you’ll be hungry all the time.  Go!

Tonight was another amazing evening.  Tonight the gang went out to Screen on the Green, which is where they show movies on the National Mall.  Our selection for the evening was Superman , and yes, Margot Kidder is still ridiculously annoying.

More pictures here.

Tomorrow night the ladies are heading out to the free Mozart Concert, courtesy of the Kennedy Center.  Should be a completely fabulous time.  Let me just say it’s so wonderful to be back in DC.  Yea, money is a little bit scarce due to the move, but we’re thankfully just about over that hump.

No witty commentary on society, pop culture, or movies tonight.  Just a happy girl named Liz.  I’ll be back to my usual crap after this.

I will say this, though.  I’m glad the Washington Redskins won their second pre-season game.  I will admit, however, the first punt return left me screaming at the TV.  What happened, you might ask… I’ll tell you! The person who caught the punt (a Redskin) let the ball leap out of his hands, and the Buffalo Bills recovered it.  That’s right; the Bills recovered their own kick, which was the kickoff to the game.

Being a Skins fan can be so stressful… and it’s not even the actual football season yet.
